The Eat Clean Diet is a way of eating that promotes, as the name suggests, fresh, unprocessed and unrefined ‘clean’ foods. Although the website claims that it is actually not a diet (which is confusing given the title), it does promise fast fat loss, as illustrated by the numerous photo testimonials shown on the site.

The website itself has a very clean and ‘green’ image, and is easy to navigate and very simple to read. A fair amount of the site is about the founder of the diet Tosca Reno, a Canadian mom who has gone on to produce a range of books in the Eat Clean series, including family and kids cookbooks and an Eat Clean workout book. Although Reno obviously seems to put herself forward as an expert in the field, there is nothing to show that she has any formal qualifications, just simply that she was once obese and is now passing on the knowledge she learn in order to lose weight.

There is no online diet plan required for the Eat Clean diet. Anyone wishing to follow the plan must purchase the book which is available at a cost of $16.95. A feature on the website allows the user to virtually leaf through the book and any of the others in Reno’s range. The basics of the diet are explained on the site and these include eating 6 meals per day, drinking reasonable amounts of water, cutting out sugars and high-fat foods and finally, eating the food ‘God gave us’ as opposed to processed, factory produced items. No sample recipes are given on the site nor are there any meal samples or menu guides.

It is not known exactly how long one must follow the diet plan for, but it is assumed that much like similar diets, such as the Mediterranean and Sonoma diets, the plan should be used for a lifetime in order to achieve continued energy, vitality and maintained weight loss. The Eat Clean book does claim that the dieter can expect to lose approximately 2lbs per week, which, although within the medically recommended amount is certainly not the ‘fast fat loss’ as promised earlier.

The Eat Clean Diet is yet another attempt to re-package knowledge that is already available to many people and sell it as a new approach to weight loss. Whilst it may be handy to have all the information available from one source, in this case the Eat Clean Book, anyone needing to lose a substantial amount of weight will likely need a more one-on-one approach, with personal support and counseling.

Anyone else wishing to incorporate fresh, healthy foods into their life could just as easily follow the American Heart Associations guidelines and eat according to the amounts shown by the standard food pyramid.
