Vegan vs. Vegetarian

Linda Bell

Dieting is something that we can all relate to. At some point in our lives, we have all consciously or subconsciously altered our eating habits. Our eating habits can change because of our emotions. If we are happy and confident, we might eat healthier food. When some people are down in the dumps, they will treat this sadness with fatty foods that they shouldn’t get near. The opposite is also true. When some people are happy and at a social event, they tend to eat more because they are unaware of how much they have already eaten. In addition, when some people are depressed they lose their appetite. As you can tell, people’s eating habits aren’t predictable. However, they are based on our emotions. Our emotions cause us to eat certain foods over others. Some people follow a vegetarian diet. Some prefer to follow a vegan diet instead. Let’s discuss what differentiates these diets from each other.

Vegetarians typically don’t eat meat, fish or poultry. However, this can vary from person to person. Some people follow this diet strictly, while others do not. It is very similar to religion. Some followers of a religion will follow each and every rule, while other people don’t prefer to do that. Those who don’t follow all of the usual vegetarian eating habits are sometimes referred to as semi-vegetarians.

A vegan diet also omits meat, fish and poultry. Vegans also don’t eat animal products or by-products either. These products include things such as eggs, dairy products and honey. They also won’t wear animal products or by-products. These can include things such as leather, fur or wool. Let’s compare the two.

As you can tell, being a vegetarian is strictly diet related. Veganism is more of a lifestyle choice than only changing one’s diet. This can cause vegans to feel more passionately about their decision. Many people have tried to become vegetarians, only to go back to meat. It could be argued that being a vegan is more of a long term commitment.

While many people become vegetarians because they have sympathy for the way animals are treated, others adopt this diet because they just don’t care for the taste of meat. These people are not really concerned with the way animals are treated by food companies. They simply don’t like the way meat tastes.

Many of you may be asking if being a vegan or a vegetarian is healthy for your body. Clearly, it is good to expose your body to fresh fruits and vegetables on a regular basis. We know that these items are a great source of vitamins and nutrients. The problem many doctors find with those who are vegan is that they are not getting enough protein. Vegetarian , on the other hand, can get their protein from eggs. Vegans can turn to peanuts and peanut butter. Doctors suggest that follower of either diet should be taking protein supplements to balance out their diet. Any proper diet has to be a balanced one.
